Suit Too Big? Here Is What a Tailor Can Take In

A suit that swallows you is not a lost cause, it is a fitting away from looking sharp. When a jacket feels boxy through the body or the trousers bunch at the waist, a tailor can take in the sides, shoulders, sleeves, and seat so the suit follows your frame. Sami Abujudeh has resized oversized suits in Orange County for over 40 years, so you know what is worth altering and what is not.

WHAT A TAILOR CAN TAKE IN

When the suit is too big, here is what moves

Jacket sides

The most common fix for a too-big jacket. Taking in the side and back seams pulls the body close so it stops billowing.

Sleeves

Shortened when they cover your hand, and slimmed when they hang wide, so a clean quarter inch of shirt cuff shows.

Shoulders

If the shoulder seam droops past your own shoulder, it can be narrowed. This is the hardest alteration, but it is doable.

Trouser waist

A loose waistband is taken in at the center back seam so the trousers sit without a belt cinching them shut.

Trouser taper

Wide, baggy legs are tapered through the thigh and knee for a modern line, then hemmed to the right break.

Jacket length

When a jacket reads long and heavy, the hem can be balanced to your height so the proportions look right.

WHERE THE LIMITS ARE

How big is too big to fix?

Most oversized suits can be brought in beautifully, but every garment has a point where altering it stops making sense. The honest rule of thumb is the shoulders. If the jacket fits or sits close at the shoulder, almost everything below it can be taken in to follow your shape. If the shoulder seam falls well past your own and the chest is several sizes too large, the structure has to be rebuilt, and at that point a better-sized jacket is the smarter buy. We will tell you which side of that line your suit is on before any work begins.

Fabric matters too. We work with any fabric, though some let-out room depends on the seam allowances the maker left inside the garment. A jacket can usually come in two sizes cleanly, sometimes more. Trousers are very forgiving at the waist and taper. The goal is always a suit that looks intentional, not one stretched past what the cloth wants to do. If your suit is the right size but just needs refining, our full suit and sportcoat alterations cover shoulders, sleeves, taper, and length, and simple hemming and repairs handle hems, seams, and zippers.

GOOD TO KNOW

Suit too big FAQs

Can a tailor take in a suit jacket that is too big?

Yes. Taking in the side and back seams of a jacket is one of the most common alterations. As long as the shoulders fit reasonably well, the body, sleeves, and waist can be brought in close to your frame.

How many sizes can a suit be taken in?

A jacket can usually come in about two sizes cleanly, and trousers are even more forgiving at the waist and taper. Bring the suit in and we will tell you exactly how far it can go before any work begins.

My suit doesn't fit in the shoulders. Can that be fixed?

Shoulders can be narrowed, and with 40+ years of experience we do it cleanly. It is the most demanding suit alteration, so if the shoulders are several sizes too large, a better-fitting jacket may serve you better. We will give you an honest read.

My suit trousers are too big in the waist. Can you take them in?

Yes. The waistband is taken in at the center back seam so the trousers sit without a belt holding them up, and we can taper the legs at the same time for a sharper line.
