Jacket Sleeve Alterations in San Juan Capistrano
Sleeve length is the most common change on a new suit jacket and one of the most visible. Sami sets it with you wearing the shirt you'll wear with the jacket.

The right length
A little shirt cuff showing
The usual aim is for the jacket sleeve to end so a small strip of shirt cuff shows below it, about a quarter to half an inch, with your arms relaxed at your sides. Wear a dress shirt that fits you to the fitting, since the shirt cuff is half of the picture.
If you wear a watch on that wrist, wear it too. Sami pins both sleeves, because most people's arms are not exactly the same length.
What decides the job
Look at the buttons first
The buttons at the cuff decide how much work the sleeve needs.
Decorative buttons
On most jackets the cuff buttons are sewn on over a closed vent. The sleeve is shortened from the cuff and the buttons are moved up with it.
Working buttonholes
Cut buttonholes can't be moved. A small change can sometimes be taken from the cuff; a bigger one has to come from the shoulder, which is a larger job.
Lengthening
A sleeve can only be let down as far as the cloth folded inside the cuff allows. The old fold can leave a line on some fabrics.
The lining
The lining is shortened or let down with the sleeve so it doesn't pull or hang below the cuff.
How it works

You get the price at the counter before any work begins.
- 04
Pick it up
Ask about timing when you drop it off. For an interview or a wedding, call ahead with the date.
More than sleeves?
When the jacket needs other work
If the shoulders are too wide or the body is boxy, shortening the sleeves won't fix the fit. The whole jacket is covered on suit and sportcoat alterations, and a jacket that's much too big on when a suit is too big.
Trousers from the same suit can be hemmed at the same visit; see pants and jeans hemming.

Jacket Sleeves questions
Something else? Call (949) 493-0505 and Sami will help.
How much shirt cuff should show below a jacket sleeve?
About a quarter to half an inch with your arms relaxed at your sides. Wear a fitted dress shirt to the fitting so the length is set against the real cuff.
Can sleeves with working buttonholes be shortened?
Sometimes a little, from the cuff. For a bigger change the sleeve is shortened from the shoulder instead, which is a larger job. Sami will tell you which applies to your jacket.
Can a jacket sleeve be made longer?
Only as far as the cloth folded inside the cuff allows. On some fabrics the old fold leaves a faint line.
How much does it cost to shorten jacket sleeves?
It depends on the jacket: decorative or working buttons, a lining, and whether the change is taken from the cuff or the shoulder. You get the price at the counter before any work begins.
Do I need an appointment?
No. Walk in Monday to Friday 10 to 5 or Saturday 10 to 3, wearing a dress shirt. Call (949) 493-0505 if you need the jacket by a certain date.
