How to Make Pants Smaller: Waist, Taper, and Hem

If your pants are too big in the waist or too baggy through the leg, a tailor can fix that. There are three common ways to make pants smaller, taking in the waist, tapering the legs, and hemming the length. Done together, they turn loose, ill-fitting trousers or jeans into a clean, modern fit. Sami Abujudeh has tailored pants in Orange County for over 40 years.

THREE WAYS TO MAKE PANTS SMALLER

Where the fit actually comes from

Take in the waist

The center back seam is opened and brought in, the most common fix when pants are too big at the waist. We can usually take in one to three inches cleanly.

Adjust the seat

When trousers bag under the seat, the rear is reshaped along with the waist so the back lies flat instead of pooling.

Taper the legs

Baggy legs are slimmed along the inseam and outseam from the thigh down, narrowing the opening for a sharper, modern line.

Hem the length

Length is shortened to the right break, plain or cuffed, so the hem sits properly over your shoe instead of bunching.

Jeans, too

Jeans that are too big get the same treatment, waist in, legs tapered, and the original hem kept so the finish still looks like denim.

Any fabric

Wool dress trousers, chinos, denim, or linen, we resize and press to finish so the result looks built for you.

WHAT A TAILOR ACTUALLY DOES

Pants too big? Here is how we bring them in.

Most people start with a waistband that gapes. To take in the waist, we open the center back seam, pin the trousers to your measurement, and re-sew the seam so it follows your shape. A simple waist take-in is one of the quickest and most affordable alterations, and on many garments it can be done same day. If the seat bags below the waist, we reshape that area at the same time so the whole back of the trouser lies smooth.

Baggy legs are a separate job. To taper pants, we slim the inseam and outseam from the thigh down toward the ankle, narrowing the leg opening for a trimmer line. Tapering pairs naturally with hemming, since once the leg is brought in we set the length to the break you want. For jeans, we can preserve the original stitched hem so the denim keeps its factory look. For a deeper look at length and finishing, see our hemming and repairs page.

Pants are rarely the only thing that fits loose after a change in size. If a jacket, shirt, or a full outfit needs bringing in as well, our guide to clothes that are too big walks through resizing the rest of your wardrobe. Suit trousers in particular are best matched to the jacket, which we cover on the suit and sportcoat alterations page. When you are short on time, ask about our same-day alterations, since a basic waist take-in is often ready while you wait. We work with any fabric and any budget, with fair, transparent pricing quoted up front before any work begins.

GOOD TO KNOW

Making pants smaller, answered

How much smaller can a tailor make pants in the waist?

On most trousers and jeans we can take in the waist by about one to three inches at the center back seam and still keep the proportions clean. Bring the pants by and we will tell you exactly what is possible for your garment.

Can you taper baggy pants and jeans to be slimmer?

Yes. Tapering slims the legs along the inseam and outseam from the thigh down for a trimmer line. For jeans, we can keep the original hem so the denim still looks factory finished.

Can you take in the waist and hem the pants at the same time?

Absolutely. Waist take-in, leg taper, and hemming are often done together in one visit so the pants fit correctly everywhere at once. See our hemming and repairs page for length details.

How much does it cost to make pants smaller?

Pricing is fair and transparent, and depends on whether you need the waist, taper, hem, or all three. We quote you before any work begins. Call (949) 493-0505 for a quick estimate.
