FIT GUIDE
Clothes Too Big? Here Is How a Tailor Fixes the Fit
If your clothes are too big, too loose, or simply do not fit the way they should, take a breath. You do not have to give them away or start over. Most garments can be taken in and reshaped to your real measurements, and after 40+ years of tailoring in Orange County, Sami Abujudeh and his son have seen just about every fit problem there is.
WHY THIS HAPPENS
Loose clothes are usually a fixable problem
There are a hundred reasons a garment ends up too big. Maybe you lost weight and your favorite jeans no longer hold their shape. Maybe a jacket fit in the store but billows at the back once you move. Maybe a dress was bought a size up for comfort, or an online order arrived larger than the label promised. Whatever the cause, the good news is the same: when clothes are too big rather than too small, a tailor has plenty of fabric to work with, and that is the easier direction to alter.
Taking a garment in means carefully opening the seams, removing the excess fabric, and re-sewing it so the piece follows your body again. Done by hand and eye, the seams sit where they belong and the finished result looks like the size you should have bought in the first place. We work with any fabric, on clothes for men, women, and children, with fair and transparent pricing quoted before any work begins.
WHAT WE CAN TAKE IN
Almost everything in your closet
Shirts & blouses
Slimmed through the sides and shoulders so a baggy shirt tucks in clean and follows your frame.
Dresses
Taken in at the waist, bust, and sides so a loose dress flatters again. See how we take in a dress.
Pants & jeans
Waist, seat, and leg brought in for a modern line. Learn more about how we make pants smaller.
Suits & jackets
Sides tapered and length balanced so an oversized jacket fits your shape. See our suit alterations.
Skirts
Waistbands taken in and hems adjusted so a slipping skirt sits and hangs the way it should.
Coats & outerwear
Resized through the body and sleeves so a roomy coat keeps you warm without swallowing you.
HONEST EXPECTATIONS
What is realistic, and what is not
We believe in telling you the truth before you spend a dollar. Most pieces can come down one to two sizes comfortably, and many can go further. The seams, the darts, and the structure give us room to reshape the garment without losing its proportions.
There are limits, and we will always be straight with you about them. Bringing something down several sizes at once can change how a garment was designed to drape, since pockets, pleats, and patterns are set in fixed positions. Heavily structured pieces, tightly pleated designs, and certain delicate fabrics take more time and care. When a garment cannot be altered cleanly, we will say so honestly rather than take on work that will not turn out well. Bring the item in, let us look at it on you, and we will tell you exactly what is possible.
After weight loss, the same rules apply, and the news is usually encouraging. Clothes you love but no longer fill out can almost always be brought back to your new measurements, which is far kinder to your wallet than replacing a whole wardrobe. If you are still losing or your size is changing, it can be worth waiting until things settle before a final fitting, and we are happy to advise on timing when you visit.
JUST BRING IT IN
Not sure if it can be fixed? Bring it by
The hardest part is usually deciding to do something about it. You do not need a plan, an appointment, or even a clear idea of what you want changed. Wear the garment in, or bring it along with you, and we will pin it, look at how it sits, and talk through your options in plain language. Walk-ins are always welcome, and a quick fitting often tells us more than any guess over the phone.
For smaller jobs like a waist taken in or a hem brought up, we may be able to handle it the same day. Ask about our same-day alterations when you call. And if your too-big garment also needs a stuck zipper, a torn lining, or a loose seam fixed at the same time, our hemming and repairs service can take care of that in the same visit.

GOOD TO KNOW
Clothes too big FAQs
Can any garment be made smaller?
Most garments can be taken in by one or two sizes, and many can go further. Shirts, dresses, pants, suits, and coats are all routine for us. Bring the item in and we will tell you honestly what is realistic for that specific piece and fabric.
My clothes are too big after weight loss. Can you help?
Absolutely. Resizing clothes after weight loss is one of the most common jobs we do, and it is far cheaper than buying a whole new wardrobe. If your size is still changing, it can be worth waiting until it settles before a final fitting.
Do I need an appointment to get clothes resized?
No. Walk-ins are welcome for fittings and drop-offs. Wear the garment in or bring it with you, and we will pin it and walk through your options. For several items at once, a quick call to (949) 493-0505 helps us plan the time.
How much does it cost to make clothes smaller?
It depends on the garment and how much needs to change, but our pricing is fair and transparent and quoted before any work begins. Call (949) 493-0505 or bring the piece in for a quick estimate.
