Bridesmaid Dress Alterations in San Juan Capistrano

Bridesmaid and mother-of-the-bride dresses need to work for a full day of standing, sitting and dancing. Plan around the event date, with the shoes and undergarments settled before the hem is marked.

Mon–Fri 10am–5pm · Sat 10am–3pm

One event, several schedules

Plan the group before booking the fittings

Call once the dresses have arrived and you know the wedding date. Explain how many people need alterations, when each person will be in town and whether anyone leaves early for the event. The travel date may be the real deadline.

Ask whether the shop can accommodate the group together or needs separate visits. Each dress needs to be fitted on the person wearing it, even when everyone ordered the same style. Leave room in the schedule for a check after the first alterations.

Mother-of-the-bride and mother-of-the-groom dresses can need the same planning, particularly with a matching jacket, sleeves or a lined bodice. The bride's gown, train and bustle are covered separately on wedding dress alterations.

The main adjustments

Set the top before setting the hem

  • Hem with the event shoes

Heel height changes where the skirt falls. Bring the exact shoes, and mention if you plan to switch to flats later. A floor-length hem set for heels may drag in lower shoes.

  • Taking in the bodice

Side seams and existing shaping seams can reduce extra room at the bust and waist. The lining, zipper and any boning need to stay aligned with the outer dress.

  • Adjusting the straps

Shorter straps can lift a loose neckline, but also raise the armholes and hem. Check the neckline and room under the arms before deciding on the skirt length.

  • Working with layers

Chiffon, satin, linings and tulle may need separate hems. Lace borders or beaded edges can require a different approach from a plain skirt, so mention those details when you call.

What to bring

Make each fitting useful

  1. 01

    Bring the complete outfit

Bring the dress, event shoes and the bra or other undergarments you plan to wear. Include any matching jacket or wrap that affects how the outfit sits.

  2. 02

    Share the intended look

Explain the hem length and neckline you want. If the group wants a consistent skirt length, agree whether that means floor length or a particular distance above the floor.

  3. 03

Sit, walk and raise your arms

Check that the bodice stays comfortable and the straps stay in place as you move. A dress that looks right standing still also needs to work at the reception.

  4. 04

    Confirm pickup before leaving

Give the date you need to take the dress home, including any travel. Ask whether another fitting is needed and agree on the completion date before work starts.

Before exchanging a size

Making a dress bigger depends on spare fabric

A dress can only be let out if its construction and seam allowances allow it. Many formal dresses have little spare cloth, and old stitching may leave marks on delicate fabric. Do not assume a smaller size can be enlarged later.

A large reduction can also change the position of the straps, waist and decorative details. For a fuller explanation of where a dress can be reduced, see taking in a dress that is too big. Bring an ill-fitting dress for assessment while an exchange is still possible.

Bridesmaid Dress Alterations questions

Something else? Call (949) 493-0505 and Sami will help.

When should our bridesmaids arrange alterations?

Call once the dresses arrive and share the event date, group size and any travel deadlines. Ask for a schedule that leaves room for fittings and a final check; there is no single turnaround that suits every group.

Can the whole wedding party come for one fitting?

Call first to ask whether a group fitting can be accommodated. Each person needs their own fit checked, and separate visits may be needed.

Do I need my wedding shoes for a bridesmaid dress hem?

Yes, bring the shoes you will wear with the dress. If you plan to change into flats, discuss that before the hem is marked.

Can a mother-of-the-bride dress be altered too?

Yes, Sami's Tailoring also alters mother-of-the-bride dresses. Bring any matching jacket and your event shoes, and call first for a larger job or a fixed event deadline.

Will shortening the straps change the dress length?

Yes, lifting the dress at the straps can raise the hem as well as the neckline and armholes. Settle the upper fit before finalizing the hem.

Can a bridesmaid dress be let out?

Only if there is enough usable fabric inside the seams and the construction allows it. A lined or beaded dress needs to be checked before assuming it can be made larger.
